Copper or Gold

With Gold prices going through the roof is gold jewelry still King or is copper an alternative option?  As a jewelry artist I am always trying to come up with new ideas and keep my ear to the floor to hear what many people like and what they are looking for.  What is the priority?  Originality, handcrafted, price, light elegant, big or small in size, simple or complex in design?
These are always the questions that go through an artist.  So, I am open to some ideas from you.
